On short stories in which nothing happens (writing with children)

EldestĀ is writing a 500-word story.

‘Mum, with short stories, is it OK if nothing happens?’

‘Absolutely nothing?’ (Smiles.)

‘No, not absolutely nothing… just… thoughts and things?’

‘Sort of. Here, read this.’

I give him THE TURKEY by Flannery O’Connor. Now, OK, there is a turkey, but the main story would be about thoughts and things.

(Now trying to remember if that’s OK for a kid to read.)

      1. I enjoyed THE WITCH, think just by its age it implied so much of the time / recent history. I’ve got quite a lot of his shorts on Kindle so will have a read.
